Constitutional Protection and Civil Liberties
JALSA has sought to respond to the challenges to civil liberties posed by
the perceived need to be more vigilant in guarding against terrorism. These
responses have included:
- Vigilance in assuring that freedom is not subsumed by a preoccupation
with concern for security
- Concern for the rights of those detained as an incident of the fight
against terrorism
- Undertaking to alert citizens to the civil rights challenges posed by
the USA Patriot Act and other measures taken
under the aegis of fighting terrorism
- Working to safeguard the rights of aliens in the area
- Opposing efforts to make local police into agents for federal
immigration law enforcement
- Undertaking to reduce prejudiced behavior toward Moslems in the
aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks; and
- Working to address hate crime issues.
- Asylum and Protection of Refugees
In the past, we have addressed these specific issues:
- Protection of Separation of Church and State
- Opposition to School Vouchers
- Protection of Religious Liberty
- Prevention of Erosion of Civil Liberties
