NewsAJCongress's National Meeting Was a SuccessLetter to the Editor - Phil Baum Republished by permission of the Forward It is not surprising that David Guberman, in his November 30 letter, was completely wrong in his description of the American Jewish Congress's national convention in Washington ("AJCongress Defense of Firings Not Credible). After all, he wasn't there. AJCongress's convention was one of its best attended in years, due primarily to the efforts of the regional directors in cities other than Boston. It is hard to understand why a convention, held only weeks after September 11 and devoted in great part to issues of terrorism and the U.S.-Israel relationship, should not have produced more than three representatives from the New England region. Participants in our deliberations included Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and former CIA director R. James Woolsey, as well as Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christopher Dodd and Carl Levin, Rep. Tom Lantos, Ambassador Aaron Miller and Afghan feminist Nasrine Gross, who donned a burka as part of her graphic presentation on, Taliban oppression. The program was extraordinary It is Mr. Guberman's loss that he missed it and the spirit and renewed sense of dedication to AJCongress of those who did attend. Phil Baum
