NewsJALSA To Discuss BudgetMarch 28, 2003 BROOKLINE ‑ The Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action (JALSA) hosts a series of events for young social activists on the first Sunday evening of every other month. "How Low Can We Go: The State Budget and Tax Policy" will be the topic from 5‑7 p.m. on Sunday, April 6 at Temple Ohabei Shalom, 1187 Beacon St. Speakers will include State Rep. Ruth Balser, State Rep. Frank Smizik, and Noah Berger, executive director of the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center. The presenters will provide their perspectives on the state budget crisis, and how to responsibly continue to provide state services even in times of fiscal crisis. Balser represents the Newton and Smizik represents Brookline in the state Legislature. Berger served in the State House as counsel and policy director to former Senate President Thomas Birmingham. The MBPC, formerly known as TEAM, provides independent research and analysis of state budget policies, as well as economic issues, that affect low‑ and moderate‑income people in Mass.
