BROOKLINE ‑ The Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action (JALSA) is organizing a series of events for social activists in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. On the first Sunday of every other month, JALSA will hold a meeting to introduce a speaker and cutting edge public policy topic.

From 5‑7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, join JALSA for "The Balance Between Liberty and Security" with lecturer Harvey Silverglate, a noted attorney The meeting‑ will take place at Temple Sinai, 50 Sewall Ave. Issues to be discussed: How have the events of Sept. 11th impacted liberty both negatively and positively? Are liberty and security really in a relationship of tension and antagonism, or are they (or at least should they be) in a symbiotic and mutually supportive relationship? What are the consequences for privacy, free speech, and equality of all citizens before the law, and judicial fairness resulting from recent legislation, administrative actions, and other developments? Where are we, and where are we likely going?

As a partner in the Boston law firm of Silverglate & Good, Silverglate specializes in criminal defense, civil liberties, academic freedom, and student rights law. As president of the Mass. state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, he initiated the Bill of Rights Education Project and a Campus Charter project resulting in the formation of ACLU‑related student groups on college campuses throughout the state.

For more than two decades, Silverglate has been the criminal law and civil liberties columnist for The Boston Phoenix and a frequent columnist for The National Law Journal. He is the co‑founder of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which is dedicated to preserving academic freedom, freedom of speech, and freedom of conscience on American college campuses.

Dinner and schmoozing will begin at 5 p.m., followed by Silverglate's presentation at 5:30 p.m., brainstorming hot topics at 6:30 p.m., and dessert.

JALSA will provide a kosher dairy entree and the remainder of the items will be potluck desserts and appetizers. RSVP by Monday, Jan. 27. For more information, contact Cindy (jalsa@RoweResources .com or 617‑742‑1836).
