Don’t you want to be part of the celebration?

If you were a member of JALSA,
you could have celebrated the following accomplishments just in the last few weeks:

* Taking the lead on stem cell research by opposing the right-wing
and getting the Massachusetts Legislature to pass a bill encouraging scientists
to do their groundbreaking work here in our state.
(JALSA worked with Senate and House members to fine tune the drafting of the legislation, and helped to form a coalition of scientists, academics, hospital executives
and religious groups to strongly support its passage).

* Enjoying a victory in the case of Lynn v. Comfort, which allows the City of Lynn
to continue to ensure integration of its schools by including race as one component
of voluntary school assignments? (JALSA had submitted two briefs to the initial panel
of the US Court of Appeals, one on behalf of education groups, and one on behalf of interfaith and civil rights groups. JALSA also filed a brief when the case went to the full bench); and

* Taking a significant step to protect the Massachusetts constitutional provisions that limit the initiative petition, of particular significance as opponents attempt to overturn equal marriage via an initiative petition. (Proponents of public dollars for religious schools attempted to use the initiative petition procedure to end the state's constitutional prohibition of public funds of private or religious institutions. JALSA provided an amicus brief co-signed  by many religious and civil rights groups in this case where the US Court of Appeals upheld the Massachusetts constitutional provisions which excludes certain subjects from constitutional change via the initiative petition.)
