Educational Coalitions

JALSA is pleased to participate in the following outstanding Educational Coalitions:

The Alliance for the Education of the Whole Child (formerly the Alliance for High Standards Not High Stakes), is a coalition of more than 45 education and civil rights organizations concerned about the over-reliance on standardized testing in the public schools, with particular emphasis on promoting alternatives to the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System or MCAS. The Alliance works to establish a strong system of authentic school accountability measures that rest on a balance of local and state measures using multiple forms of assessment. The Alliance also works to support adequate and sufficient state funding for high-quality public education that enables all students to meet reasonable graduation requirements and to ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach high standards and receive timely and effective interventions as needed.

Citizens for Public Schools (CPS) is a broad coalition of over 50 civic, civil rights, labor, religious and education organizations committed to strong, democratically accountable public schools. It supports education reform and works against privatization of the public schools -- including opposition to for-profit charter schools, vouchers, or other measures that take public funds away from public schools. CPS has worked tirelessly to ensure that public funds are not diverted to private and religious schools, or charter schools that are not locally accountable. CPS believes our society is best served when publicly funded schools are accountable to the whole community and open to all children. CPS strongly believes that a clear delineation between church and state advances the goals of public education and religious liberty. www.citizensforpublicschools.org

The Massachusetts Coalition for Equitable Education (MCEE) was created to maintain Massachusetts’ historic commitment to successful integration efforts. It functions as a vehicle for immigrant and minority students, parents, and social action groups to come together and advocate for their interests on issues of education. MCEE functions as a broad-based coalition dedicated to achieving equitable educational opportunities for students of all incomes and races in public schools and working to eliminate the achievement gap.

Mass English Plus is a Massachusetts-wide coalition of concerned individuals and organizations dedicated to helping communities confront the problem of racism as it is linked to language-based discrimination through advocacy, coalition-building and educational activities. Its mission is to fight against all forms of language-based discrimination and to promote better services for language minorities. www.massenglishplus.org
